THE FESTIVAL
James Dean Fest will be held June 3-5 at the Marion Municipal Airport, with other activities around town and Grant County. The three-day festival is planned as part of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the late actor’s death. Dean, a Grant County native, made three movies, Rebel Without A Cause, East of Eden and Giant, before his death in an automobile accident on Sept. 30, 1955.
MUSICAL ACTS
Music will be a big part of the three-day festival with approximately nine bands or artists performing over the three days. Among those scheduled to appear are:
- America (Horse With No Name)
- The Fifth Dimension (Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In)
- Gary Puckett (Young Girl)
- Herman’s Hermits (There’s a Kind of Hush (All Over the World))
- 1964, the Beatles tribute band
FAMOUS FACES
Among those scheduled to appear at James Dean Fest are Martin Sheen, Dennis Hooper, Giant co-stars Jane Withers and Earl Holliman and Rebel Without A Cause co-stars Corey Allen and Frank Mazzola.
NEVER SEEN HIS MOVIES?
For each night of the festival, attendees can watch one of James Dean’s three movies on a 100-foot-wide outdoor digital screen. East of Eden will be shown on June 3; followed by Rebel Without A Cause on June 4; and Giant on June 5. Before the showing of Rebel Without A Cause, the documentary James Dean: Forever Young will premiere, introduced by director Michael J. Sheridan and its narrator, actor Martin Sheen.
WANT TO COME HOME WITH SOMETHING COOL?
As part of the weekend’s activities, there will be a “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” a city-walk that will include street vendors selling James Dean merchandise and food.
INTO CARS?
Make sure you stop by the “Rebel on the Road” traveling exhibit, which will feature a replica of James Dean’s infamous Porsche Spyder and the No. 33 James Dean 50th Anniversary Chevrolet Monte Carlo that will be driven by NASCAR driver Tony Stewart in a Busch Series race this summer. Stewart will also be in attendance.
HAVE A CLASSIC CAR?
Think about getting involved in a three-day “Cool Car Show” that will include cars and motorcycles pre- and post-1957, with cash prizes for the coolest car or motorcycle.
DREAM OF BEING A STAR?
If you know acting’s in your blood, you can act out famous scenes from James Dean’s movies on replica film sets with props. Your performance will be burned onto a DVD as a keepsake of the event.
