  • they'll have access to, a detailed schedule for the June 3 through 5 event has been released.

The schedule includes screenings of Dean's three movies, starting Friday night with East of Edenand ending Sunday with Giant. Saturday, audiences will see Rebel Without a Causeand the U.S. premiere of the new documentary, James Dean: Forever Young. Each screening is preceded by a 30-minute celebrity introduction.

Two bands will play each afternoon, with Beatles tribute band 1964 and The Fifth Dimension on Friday; Gary Puckett and new addition Little River Band (Lonesome Loser, Cool Change) on Saturday; and Herman's Hermits and America on Sunday.

Each day of the festival includes signings by George Perry, author of the new book James Dean, photographers Dennis Stock and Phil Stern, friends, co-stars and famous fans of Dean and artist Charles Fazzino.

Earlier this month, the Federal Aviation Administration denied a request to halt operations at the Marion Municipal Airport for the event, which organizers hope will draw tens of thousands of people. FAA spokesman Tony Molinaro said Friday that officials have yet to make a decision on a partial closure.

"We're still on hold on this one," Molinaro said.

Dean Fest organizers said the show will go on regardless of the FAA's decision. Event executive producer and CEO John Goldstone said he has been in contact with Marion Mayor Wayne Seybold about the issue.

"It's very much under control, it's not very high on our agenda," Goldstone said. "It's really in (Seybold's) hands because it's the city's deal and he's making the necessary arrangements."

Event organizers are also looking for local residents interested in working at the ticket gates, storage tent and parking areas of the Dean Fest. Positions will pay minimum wage and employees will need to be able to stand on their feet for long periods of time. Those interested can contact the local headquarters at 502 S. Washington St. or by calling 668-4488.

Tickets are being sold through Ticketmaster and at the local event headquarters. A three-day package advance purchase is $45 per person and the package will cost $55 at the gate. Single-day advance purchase is $20 per person and the pass will cost $25 at the gate. Indiana students with valid IDs receive $5 off ticket price.

When asked this week how many tickets had been sold, event producer Israel Baron said that information is confidential.

Ticketmaster spokeswoman Bonnie Poindexter said the company is not authorized to provide ticket sale numbers.

The Dean Fest has an agreement with Marsh Supermarkets to sell James Dean Movie-PAC packages at more than 100 stores across Indiana. The Movie-PACs cost $9.95 and include $5 discounts off tickets, a $33 gift card for Dean merchandise, a poster offer and access to members-only portions of the official event Web site, www.jamesdeanfest.com.

While area hotels are filling up for the June weekend of the Dean Fest, some rooms are still available in Grant and the surrounding counties. In Grant County, the Comfort Suites, Days Inn, Holiday Inn Express and Burke Place Bed and Breakfast are all sold out. The Hampton Inn is sold out for June 4.

A limited number of rooms were available earlier this week at the Hotel Marion, at the Hampton Inn for June 3 and 5, the Super 8, the Best Western, Big Pine Farm Bed and Breakfast and This Old Barn bed and breakfast. The Courtesy Economy Inn has 20 of its 34 rooms available.

"We're getting plenty of calls," said Pam Johnson, sales manager at the Hotel Marion. "I think a lot of people are waiting until the last minute, but we're hoping to fill up. I had several calls today and I'm hoping those people will call back and book."

In the surrounding counties, visitors are reserving rooms both for the James Dean Fest and for a volleyball tournament scheduled to take place the same weekend in Muncie. Nearly all the rooms in Delaware County and three-fourths of the rooms in Madison County have been booked, according to reports from those counties' convention and visitors bureaus.

Huntington and Wabash County hotels had a limited number of rooms and about 500 of Howard County's 867 hotel rooms are still available.

Visitors to the September James Dean events for three years, Nikki and Greg Nyhuis recently booked a room for the June event. The couple has participated in hot rod and classic car clubs for 14 years.

"My husband's a big Marilyn Monroe fan, James Dean fan, Elvis fan and so am I," said Nikki Nyhuis, who moved to the United States with her husband from New Zealand six years ago. "We were at a show one day and we saw a guy with a T-shirt that had 'James Dean Run' on it, and next year we went to it and we kind of got hooked."

The couple decided to travel to Grant County both in June and September this year because they like to travel and thought each event looked a little different, Nikki, 30, said.

"We're just really looking forward to meeting some new people," she said. "There are always a great bunch of people at these events every year, just a bunch of new cars out on the road."
